Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safari

Offering an amazing diversity and profusion of wildlife in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Australia, Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris offers multi-day tours for guests hoping to have a truly memorable wildlife experience in South Australia.

A small family-run business operated by owners Geoff and Rene alongside dedicated staff, the family has been running nature-based tours since 1988. Trained guides provide authentic experiences in the outback and west coast of the Eyre Peninsula.

Situated on the Eyre Peninsula, the extraordinarily beautiful South Australian outback in this region is home to the contrasting colours of red sands and rocky gorges, blue skies and the glistening white salt of massive Lake Gairdner. It is one of the few places where Australia’s three species of kangaroos can be seen together.

Emus are common and cohabitate with more than 100 species of birds in a background of brilliant, spring wildflowers. The combination of wild koalas at Mikkira Station and swimming with sea lions and dolphins at Baird Bay means you will experience a large variety of Australia’s endemic species in one location. Staying at Kangaluna Camp, a boutique safari camp with private facilities, you will enjoy beautiful food and wine, the brightness of the stars, the unpolluted sounds of nature and the intoxicating colours of the changing landscapes.

Gawler Ranges

As the oldest geological part of South Australia, with some of it dating almost 1.6 billion years of unchanged geology, the Gawler Ranges stands as one of the best locations in the country for wildlife experiences. Undisturbed by agriculture and dense in native flora and fauna, guests to the ranges can expect to spot a wide variety of some of the country’s most iconic species right outside their door. The region is home to more than 100 species of birds, 976 plant species, and over 162 different animal species.

From the coloured rocks of Lake Sturt to the stark white salt plains of Lake Gairdner, the otherworldly sensation of the Gawler Ranges is unlike anything else in Australia. Here, ancient lakes and rock formations make up a mesmerising collage of colour and shape, undisturbed by tourists and untouched for thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of years.

The region is part of the Eyre Peninsula, most famous for its coast – more than 2,000 kilometres of awe-inspiring coastline, thriving marine life and some of the world’s richest waters. You can swim with sea lions and dolphins (at legendary Baird Bay), dive with giant cuttlefish, explore dramatic national parks, discover sleepy seaside towns and find a beach to call your own.

Guests can experience a fully customised tour with Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris, offering the freedom to explore the outback at your pace, with your interests in mind. You are based at their private safari camp – Kangaluna Camp, but you have freedom of choice over how you spend your days. The experience is really up to you.

All tours, meals, refreshments, accommodation, access fees and ground transports are included in this experience.

Gawler Ranges Safaris is closed over the Australian winter season from June to August (inclusive).
