Australian Explorer: An Extended Family Itinerary by Susanne

Table of Contents

BLOG | As part of our Innovative Itinerary series, this journey was created by Senior Travel Designer Susanne Regenberg Drew. An action-packed itinerary featuring an extensive family-friendly exploration of Australia.

At a Glance

This custom journey was created by one of our Senior Travel Designers, Susanne Regenberg Drew, for a multi-generational family seeking an extensive, Australia-wide journey that highlighted wildlife, adventure, and off-the-beaten-track experiences. This is a snapshot, showcasing the highlights of a much larger itinerary originally created for the clients.

Requiring in-depth skill and knowledge of Australia, the seasons and travel logistics to remote locations, Susanne’s original brief was to create an expansive three month long itinerary that a multi-generational family could enjoy together. The clients requested high-energy, action-packed activities with authentic off-the-beaten-track experiences and plenty of opportunity to engage with and view wildlife. As the original itinerary was so extensive, we are showcasing a condensed version filled with all the highlights, for families looking to enjoy an Australia-wide journey.

Venturing from the rugged remoteness of the Northern Territory’s Top End to the picturesque coastal landscapes of Tasmania’s Freycinet Coast, this itinerary showcases Australia’s innate uniqueness.  With plenty of adventure and featuring diverse activities and experiences, this itinerary will delight families of varying ages.

“I love the diversity of experiences included and the wonderful opportunities they provided my clients to learn about Australia’s flora and fauna, as well as our history. Wildlife was a main focus, and we included some of the best wildlife experiences Australia has to offer, including meeting a world expert echidna researcher, a nocturnal encounter with some of Tasmania’s endearing wildlife species, swimming with wild dolphins and sealions on the Eyre Peninsula and plenty more.”

Destination 1:

Northern Territory, Top End

Your extended luxury adventure around Australia will begin in the warm tropical embrace of the Northern Territory’s capital, Darwin. A small but vibrant city, Darwin’s peaceful nature will set you at ease, preparing you for the adventures to come.

After a relaxing and rejuvenating overnight stay in Darwin, an early start awaits the next morning in preparation for your multi-day expedition through the rugged and untouched wilderness of the Top End. With your expert guide, driver, and NT enthusiast on-hand to ensure your journey is both comfortable and interesting, you will depart Darwin and travel by vehicle to the picturesque Cobourg Peninsula. Over two days, you will have opportunity to take a refreshing swim at a natural water hole in Kakadu National Park, cruise along the Corroboree Billabong in search of crocodiles and visit the Injalak Arts Centre, where talented local Aboriginal artists display their magnificent works. The Arts centre is located within the remote Gunbalanya community, whose members welcome Venture North guests and delight in sharing their traditions and culture with you.

You will continue to venture further into the remote Arnhem Land in search of Venture North’s secluded luxury bush camp. Set atop burnt orange cliffs, the camp is tucked away, protected by the peaceful quietness of its remote location. The camp is equipped with luxurious glamping tents and all the amenities required to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Your remaining days in Arnhem Land will be spent exploring the land around you, discovering the history of the pioneering first settlers to the region, the local Aboriginal history and enjoying quintessential Northern Territory activities, such as fishing, hunting for mud crabs and relaxing in the serenity of this vast wilderness location.

As your time in Arnhem Land ends, you will leave your secluded bush camp where a charter flight will be waiting to seamlessly transfer you and your family to your next Top End experience, Bullo River Station.
Bullo River Station is a 400,000-hectare cattle station on the border of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Simultaneously running as a luxury outback lodge and a working cattle station, this property will provide unique insight into the daily life of a cattle farmer in outback Australia.

The recently refurbished accommodation offers comfortable overnight lodgings, whilst your days are spent discovering the remote far-reaches of this magnificent property and enjoying the myriad activities available. Horse riding, 4WD opportunities, helicopter excursions to secluded waterfalls and ancient Aboriginal Rock Art and joining in on day-to-day farm activities are just some of the incredible experiences on offer for your family. Whilst much of this itinerary promotes action and adventure, there is plenty of opportunity for you to relax and unwind too.

On the conclusion of your stay at Bullo, you will depart the Northern Territory via a private charter flight and make your way over the border to Western Australia.
