Islington Hotel

Islington Hotel is a boutique retreat offering history, style and stunning gardens. It also enjoys some of the city’s finest views of Mt Wellington.

Built in Regency style in 1847, it was one of the first houses to occupy the Davey Street dress circle of Hobart, an exclusive address highly regarded in what was then a class-conscious town.
Today, the property has been restored to combine contemporary sophistication with its heritage elegance. Decorated with fine artworks and furnished with antiques, Islington appeals to those who want the very best in life, complemented by great service in an atmosphere of serenity, luxury and tranquillity.
Upon arrival, the porticoed entrance opens into an expansive marble-floored hallway from which extends a library stocked with books on early Tasmania, a drawing room for the taking of tea and a morning room where the sun shines by day and the log fires crackle by night.
The centrepiece of the hotel is the conservatory, adjoining the country kitchen and extending onto a marble paved terrace. Beyond is a 35 sq metre reflecting infinity pond, a mountain view pavilion and, towering in the background, the ever-changing beauty of Mt Wellington.
Extensive gardens are populated by a landmark willow over 100 years old, a mulberry tree, cherry blossom and an ancient yew set amid plantings of exotic blooms designed by renowned garden landscaper Andrew Pfeiffer.

Hobart

With the River Derwent at its heart, Mount Wellington rising above it and dramatic settler history behind it, Hobart is arguably Australia’s most distinctive city.
Tasmania’s capital is a pocket-sized modern metropolis but enjoys the tranquillity of a city from a bygone era: its European beginnings are evident everywhere, from quaint settlers’ cottages to the lofty porches of colonial mansions. Once bustling with whalers and entrepreneurs, 19th-century sandstone warehouses now serve as dockside cafes, artist’s studios and restaurants, where you can enjoy excellent cuisine and fine wines.
Hobart is a place of fishing boats, fish punts at the docks, and coffee under the sun umbrellas where the famous Salamanca Market is held every Saturday. Take a harbour cruise past square-rigged yachts, or drive to the summit of Mount Wellington for a bird’s eye view of islands and estuaries.
The area surrounding Hobart is rich with landscapes and experiences, including the Coal River Valley wineries and Australia’s most famous convict heritage site, Port Arthur.

Regency room (first level)

The Regency room has its own verandah and private courtyard. The sun streams into this gorgeous space decorated in rich caramel, eau de nil green and aquamarine blue silks. Artwork and antiques complete the décor, the highlight of which is the original sandstone convict-built stable wall that runs the length of the room.

Signature room (ground level)

The Signature room offers over 45 sq metres of luxurious living. A Biedermeier themed room in the house itself, the centrepiece is a huge Austro-Hungarian Empire bed, a fireplace with working electric fire and luxurious furnishings upholstered in lush chocolate silks from Jim Thompson. On one side, French doors lead onto a private garden and on the other, a luxurious marble bathroom has a deep bath and separate shower stall.

Garden room (ground level)

A large junior suite overlooking the garden below, the Garden room offers modern, calm relaxing décor (think earth colours, brown, tan, gold) with large windows and French windows opening straight onto views up to the mountain. A luxurious marble bathroom has a separate rain shower, deep bath and marble screen walls.

Garden rooms (garden level)

Tucked into the hillside these rooms have French doors that open into the garden, each with private terrace and wonderful mountain views. All rooms are spacious and decorated in cool browns, tans, golds, with silk fabrics and Tasmanian timber finishes. Marble screen bathrooms have separate rain shower and toilet, a deep bath and heated floors.

Nightly rate includes

Package includes gourmet breakfast served in the kitchen and evening drinks and canapés; intimate private dinners (including six-course degustation) are available on request provided by the Resident Chef, served in the sublime conservatory.
