The Henry Jones is Australia’s first dedicated art hotel – and is itself a work of art.
Standing on Hobart’s waterfront where Europeans first stepped ashore 200 years ago, the hotel has been transformed from a row of 1820s warehouses and a former jam factory into an enthralling first class space showcasing the work of Tasmania’s finest visual and performing artists.
Some rooms in The Henry Jones enjoy sensational harbour and water views where fishing trawlers slip quietly into view just beneath the window. Other rooms overlook the stunning glass Atrium built within the old jam factory interior – one of many spaces offering a fabulous fusion of the antique and the modern.
Rooms feature natural timber furnishings, trapeze lighting, a lavish king-size bed with exotic silk covers and ottomans. Each guest room has a high quality LCD flat screen TV, DVD, with high speed Internet connectivity. You’ll marvel at the sumptuously-equipped stainless steel and translucent glass bathrooms featuring the latest in European elliptical spa baths and fittings.
Most suites and rooms feature the latest European Sok overflowing spa baths by Kohler (exclusive to The Henry Jones) where you can immerse in an ultra-deep, tranquil pool. Some suites also have a kitchenette.
Hotel rooms and public spaces exhibit original artworks, most of which are available for purchase. Each room is furnished with a catalogue of the Henry Jones Art Hotel’s collection.
Sleek-meets-antique – Town & Country Travel (US)
With the River Derwent at its heart, Mount Wellington rising above it and dramatic settler history behind it, Hobart is arguably Australia’s most distinctive city.
Tasmania’s capital is a pocket-sized modern metropolis but enjoys the tranquility of a city from a bygone era: its European beginnings are evident everywhere, from quaint settlers’ cottages to the lofty porches of colonial mansions. Once bustling with whalers and entrepreneurs, 19th-century sandstone warehouses now serve as dockside cafes, artist’s studios and restaurants, where you can enjoy excellent cuisine and fine wines.
Hobart is a place of fishing boats, fish punts at the docks, and coffee under the sun-umbrellas where the famous Salamanca Market is held every Saturday. Take a harbour cruise past square-rigged yachts, or drive to the summit of Mount Wellington for a bird’s eye view of islands and estuaries.
The area surrounding Hobart is rich with landscapes and experiences, including the Coal River Valley wineries and Australia’s most famous convict heritage site, Port Arthur.

If you wish to explore Hobart and surrounds, take a stroll down to Salamanca Place to find 19th-century waterfront warehouses dating back to the 1830’s whaling days. Today, they house cafes, restaurants, galleries and art studios, the ideal place to wander or enjoy alfresco dining – also where the Salamanca market is held every Saturday.
The Art Installation Suite is a mini art gallery as well as an accommodation suite. The mini-gallery is a stunning space particularly suitable for small private dinners or cocktail parties – or simply a stylish, highly individual accommodation indulgence.
This extra-large suite enjoys a separate private bedroom and kitchenette, king size bed and balcony with atrium views.
A suite inspired by the early settlement of a vibrant new colony. The 1823 terrace is now the oldest standing building on “Old Wharf” and houses Tasmania’s earliest Spiral Staircase. Relax in a very private setting with two bedrooms, a sitting room, kitchenette housed over two floors and an overflowing SOK bath.
These suites evoke the rich legacy of trade between Van Diemen’s Land and the East and enjoy close views of the Harbour or Mount Wellington. Each suite features the latest European Sok overflowing spa baths by Kohler (exclusive to The Henry Jones).
Rebuilt in the early 1900’s in an art nouveau style, the administration offices of H Jones & Co IXL Jams retain the spoils of a thriving and exciting time in Tasmania’s history. With oak ceilings and original skylights the H. Jones Suite easily evokes the allure of the past. You can relax on your king size bed or use the overflowing SOK spa bath.
You have a choice of Atrium view or harbour view room, each individually designed. Some retain the original walls of stone and timber trusses, columns and beams that soar upwards to just beneath to roofline. Enjoy a king size bed and a Kohler elliptical double spa.
The Henry Jones is open all year round. Peak season for visitors to the state is September to May.
