Eco-friendly and environmentally conscious luxury providers around Australia

ARTICLE | Celebrating our Top 4 Australian luxury eco-heroes

At The Tailor, we understand the importance of practicing eco-friendly and environmentally conscious tourism. This beautiful planet of ours is unbelievably special, and to put it simply, it’s home.

Did you know that Australia currently ranks highly amongst the top countries with the highest Environmental Performance Index’s, ranking 1st in marine protection, air quality and sanitation? To celebrate, we’ve decided to highlight some of our favourite Australian luxury eco-heroes, who are all doing their bit to preserve and protect our unique wildlife and landscapes. Their passion for preserving our country has created exceptionally valuable and important experiences, that we are proud to support.

Botanical Ark, Daintree Rainforest

A visit to Botanical Ark is a wonderous adventure. Set deep in the Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland, you are surrounded by vibrant colours, lush rainforest and scores of native wildlife. Listen and learn as your hosts explain the link between plants and peoples, demonstrating their teachings with an array of unusual and interesting tastes and sights.

Alan and Susan Carle began the Botanical Ark project more than 35 years ago, with the vision to ultimately create a private ethno-botanical garden. To realise this dream, they travelled the world, researching and collecting a myriad of plants featured in indigenous rainforest cultures. These plants took the form of food, spices, shelter, medicines, cosmetics, fibres, oils and so much more.

The motive behind the operation was that Alan and Susan were scared for the future of Australia’s landscapes, and were determined to do their bit in raising awareness in the value of biodiversity, especially to people.

This profound and interactive experience allows you to truly immerse yourself in nature, bringing with it a true appreciation of the value of tropical forests, and the environment as a whole.

Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef

Located within the Cape Range National Park, lies the beautifully crafted, eco-friendly Sal Salis camp. Surrounded by prolific wildlife and marine life, pristine landscapes and the iconic Ningaloo Reef, Sal Salis has great responsibility in preserving this pristine environment.

The contrasting colours of rich ocean blue and ivory white sand dunes dotted with the green of undergrowth is a sight to behold. Far from the commotion of Australia’s major cities, surrounded by nothing but a calming serenity, Sal Salis is the place to be. One of the most significant drawcards to the region is the opportunity to swim with Whale Sharks. This sustainable operation leaves no impact on these gentle giants, simply allowing you to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Decreasing their negative impact on the environment, the camp is limited to just 15 Wilderness Tents, all built above ground level to protect both the flora and fauna. Boardwalks were crafted, connecting the tents and were designed to prevent unnecessary soil erosion on the sandy embankments. Aesthetically, the camp blends into its surrounding landscapes, leaving you feeling like a part of the panorama. Heated by gas, and electricity solely generated through solar power, this lovely camp has done its part to respect and protect this magnificent destination.

Arkaba, Flinders Ranges

Acquired by Wild Bush Luxury in 2009, Arkaba in South Australia’s rugged Flinders Ranges was once an active sheep farm, but is now a dedicated private wildlife conservancy.

A truly diverse property with an array of unique and authentic experiences available. Enjoy the warming hospitality in the rustic stone homestead and explore the distinctively rugged landscape of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges. Uncover the rich history to be found in this part of South Australia and learn the struggles of the first inhabitants and the early settlers.

Arkaba are true innovators and appreciators of conservation, as a Fellow Member of the Long Run community they are committed to achieving true sustainability through conservation, community, culture and commerce. Dedicated to eradicating feral wildlife species and focussed on delivering a successful conservation program across the property, Arkaba have worked tirelessly to reverse the environmental impacts of 150 years of livestock grazing. Appreciate this property for what it is, an environmentally conscious, adventurer’s delight.

Orpheus Island Lodge, Tropical North Queensland

Orpheus Island Lodge is situated on a remote tropical island on the Great Barrier Reef. The island enjoys 11 kilometres of uninterrupted, pristine coastline, and the island itself is comprised of more than 1,000 hectares of national park.

Combining the serenity of the lodge with the splendour of the Great Barrier Reef leaves guests with a profound appreciation for this destination. The lodge provides a calming atmosphere, exuding barefoot luxury, whilst the sense of adventure and vibrancy of the reef is a welcoming contrast.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s most iconic and renowned natural phenomena. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the diverse and widespread reef-system is home to abundant marine plant and animal life. Striving to reduce the impact on the surrounding environment, Orpheus’ parent company, the Morris Group, founded the Morris Family Foundation Reef Keepers Fund.

Donating $50 for each guest staying on the island, the fund aims to preserve and protect the reef. In addition to the foundation, they have removed the use of single-use plastics throughout the lodge, encouraging guests to do the same in order to further protect the surrounding marine life. A truly wonderful operation, protecting a very important natural marvel.

So, there we have it, our top 4 Australian luxury eco-heroes. These are just four among many different luxury Australian businesses doing their bit to protect and preserve this wonderful country.

By supporting these eco-heroes in their attempts to build awareness around the connection between peoples and food and protect indigenous plant life in the Daintree Rainforest, build sustainable luxury and sustainable eco-camps on the fringes of Ningaloo Reef, regenerate thousands of hectares of Australian bushland and fund research to better protect the health of one of the seven natural wonders of the world, we are playing a small part in securing the health of this planet for generations to come.
