Staying in a heritage homestead dating from the 1850’s, guests enjoy a taste of classic Australian country hospitality while a few ‘Wild Bush Luxury’ touches ensure comfort, style and a truly memorable outback experience. With just five guest rooms, each with en-suite bathroom and air conditioning and designed in an early settler/pioneer style, Arkaba has made the transformation from outback sheep station to private wildlife conservancy and offers guests a broader wilderness experience.
An open bar with a selection of beverages is available to guests and the resident chef provides contemporary Australian cuisine infused with native elements and dinner is served on the terrace overlooking the garden and ranges.
There are comfortable leather sofas and a log fire in the library for cool nights and a swimming pool for hot days.
Staying at Arkaba as the perfect venue for those looking to escape and enjoy an intimate and personalized stay in the South Australian outback.
Arkaba was the winner of the Australian Gourmet Traveller ‘Best Outback Experience’ award in 2012.
Stretching north from Port Augusta into the sun-seared wilderness of South Australia’s deserts, the Flinders Ranges and Outback is one of the country’s most impressive destinations. The arid lands feature country-sized salt lakes, ancient seabeds and majestic ranges, places that stay with all who experience their power and solace.
The Ranges themselves – craggy and haunting – are seared into both Aboriginal and European lore. They’ve been sculpted by millions of years of rain, wind and sun to form a fractured, furrowed landscape of deep valleys and fearsome ridges, covered with casuarinas and cypress pines. Wilpena Pound is one of Australia’s most remarkable sights – a giant saucer-like depression with rims rising to 800m.
The natural environment is known for more than beautiful landscapes beneath wide blue skies: the wildlife is highly adapted and the ancient rocks have yielded fossils of the oldest-known forms of primitive life – discoveries that have rewritten the science books.
The region’s small towns are outposts of history and charm; its people are resourceful and respected, open and welcoming. The largest regional centre is Port Augusta at the head of Spencer Gulf.

Arkaba’s guides are essential in delivering the wilderness experience for their guests through their interpretation and knowledge of the flora, fauna and geology of the Flinders Ranges.
Arkaba’s topography offers some of outback Australia’s most breathtaking scenery, ranging from knife edge ridge tops through cypress pine country to red gum lined creek beds. Their expert field guides pull together the incredible geological history, wildlife and pastoral heritage of this region with some spectacular 4WD’s and guided walks that visit the secret spots on the property and a chance to take in the sights and sounds of the bush.
For taking in the sheer size and scale of Australia’s outback, for wildlife watching, bush-walking, photography, indigenous heritage or just soaking up the sights and sounds of the bush, the Flinders Ranges is in a class of its own.
Learn about wildlife conservancy, mountain bike in the foothills of the Elder Range, view the local wildlife from open top safari vehicles, take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and outback salt pans (additional cost) or an early morning walk up one of the creek beds. Local wildlife includes red and grey kangaroos, euros, yellow-footed rock wallabies and emus and the scenery is some of the best in Australia.
Activities are designed to take in the best of the morning and afternoon light, while the heat of the middle of the day is the perfect time to relax by the pool or on the homestead lawns.
The five-bedroom heritage homestead, built in 1851, has undergone a complete refurbishment, under the design eye of renowned wildlife artist, Rosie Woodford Ganf.
Drawing inspiration from Arkaba’s spectacular setting and its private wildlife conservancy, Ganf has produced a very different and very ‘Wild Bush Luxury’ homestead feel, with a focus on early settler and safari style. Her natural eye and creativity brings a rustic but supremely comfortable feel to the interior, incorporating station items, local materials, and her own wildlife artwork.
The en-suite bedrooms open on to a deep verandah with comfortable chairs – the ideal spot to take in the sunset, as the surrounding ranges take on the rich red hues of a Namatjira painting and the river red gums along Arkaba Creek vibrate with the chatter of galahs and corellas.
All meals are included and prepared by our resident chef and accompanied by an excellent selection of South Australian wines.
Arkaba is open all year round and the best times to travel are between March – December. It can get quite hot during the summer months of January and February however the homestead and all bedrooms offer air conditioning.
