As part of our Innovative Itineraries series, this journey was created by Travel Designer Luisa Rumbelow, blending scientific discovery with immersive exploration across South Australia’s most extraordinary landscapes.
This customised journey was designed for a mother and daughter from the United States, one a university student majoring in geology, and the other a former geography teacher. Seeking an academic and hands-on experience, they wanted to explore earth sciences, conservation, and viticulture in a meaningful and engaging way. Their journey provided unique opportunities to meet experts, engage with research projects, and gain a deeper understanding of the landscapes they explored.
Luisa’s expertise shines through in this highly tailored itinerary, seamlessly connecting academic research with exclusive access to Australia’s leading scientists, palaeontologists, and conservationists. The journey traverses ancient terrain, from the fossil-rich Flinders Ranges to the subterranean sinkholes of the Limestone Coast. Along the way, they gained insights into cutting-edge research, indigenous cultural storytelling, and geological formations spanning millions of years.
Beyond scientific exploration, this journey highlighted the deep cultural and environmental connections to the land. Indigenous guides shared knowledge of ancient landscapes and creation stories, while conservationists offered insight into sustainability and biodiversity efforts. These experiences added another dimension to their understanding of South Australia’s natural heritage.
With a carefully curated balance of adventure, education, and luxury, this itinerary transformed South Australia into a living laboratory. Days were spent uncovering the secrets of the land, while evenings provided time to reflect in premium accommodations. With expert-led discussions over exceptional dining, this journey became more than an experience. It was an opportunity to explore, learn, and connect with the land in a truly remarkable way.
