Silky Oaks Lodge

Wake to the call of rainforest birds at Silky Oaks Lodge, the iconic eco-experience where you reside quite literally in the canopy of the world’s oldest living rainforest.

Silky Oaks Lodge is located on the beautiful Mossman River just downstream from Mossman Gorge, one of the few places in the country where visitors can gain an insight into the lives, culture and beliefs of Australia’s Indigenous population and their connection to the natural environment. This is an area of ancient tropical rainforest containing one of the most complex ecosystems and oldest continuously surviving rainforests on earth, considered by many to be the evolutionary cradle for much of Australia’s plant and wildlife species.

The stilted Deluxe Treehouses elevate you to a level where your only neighbours are the Ulysses butterflies, the possums and the birdlife; the Riverhouses and Billabong Suites are similarly raised but enjoy spectacular river views and soothing sounds of the Mossman. Treetop seclusion combined with decks, hammocks and spa baths make for a truly sensual, luxurious escape – the stylish retreats are
designed to fully connect guests with the extraordinary natural surroundings.

As well as the 45 private treehouses, the lodge features its own 80-acre wilderness, the Treehouse Restaurant & Bar, lounge with library, media room, a pool, tennis court, gym, and the award-winning Healing Waters Spa.

Silky Oaks guests enjoy a wealth of rainforest adventures in the Daintree, but thanks to proximity to Port Douglas, the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef also await.

The forest is a huge presence – when the mist hangs over the trees you feel you might be part of the ancient world. …Once inside [the Lodge], however, you feel very much part of the 21st Century. – The Mail on Sunday (UK)

Tropical North Queensland

The Tropical North is bounded by the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park in the north, the quaint cane-field villages in the south and the magnificent Coral Sea coastline abutting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to the east.

The region is home to Queensland’s two highest peaks – Mt Bartle Frere (1622m) and Mt Bellenden Ker (1593m) – and is rich with diverse scenery including mountains, beaches, tidal wetlands, freshwater lakes, mudflats, mangrove swamps, bays, rivers, estuaries, and rich coastal plains are the dominant features of this tropical environment.

Cairns is a thriving town (one of the fastest-growing in Australia) and a popular holiday destination. Nearby Port Douglas is one of Australia’s most fashionable resort destinations with five-star restaurants, art galleries and designer boutiques. It’s located at the end of a peninsula, benefitting from tranquil waters and famous Four Mile Beach.

The Great Barrier, the world’s largest reef system comprising nearly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands – it is also the planet’s biggest single living structure, formed by billions of tiny organisms known as coral polyps. It stretches for over 2,600km, covering approximately 350,000 square kilometres.

A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use.

Silky Oaks Lodge offers a wide selection of complimentary activities including:
Selected guided naturewalks through the grounds and adjoining rainforest
Canoeing on the Mossman River
Swimming and snorkelling in the Mossman River
Relaxing by and swimming in the resort pool
Tennis & Gym
Yoga Classes (seasonal and subject to availability)

The Tailor is able to arrange an itinerary to suit your exact requirements with private helicopter or boat to the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, or guided walking tours to the 140 million-year-old Daintree Rainforest or Cape Tribulation – the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed areas meet.
