The Botanical Ark, located near Mossman in the northeast of tropical Queensland, Australia, is a private ethno-botanical garden established more than 35 years ago by conservationists Alan and Susan Carle. Situated in the wettest area of the driest inhabited continent on earth, it neighbours the World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park rainforest and lies just a few kilometres from the Great Barrier Reef.

The Ark’s mission is to conserve and showcase tropical rainforest plants that Indigenous Cultures have utilised for food, medicine, shelter, and other daily needs. By cultivating over 3,000 species from more than 40 countries, it emphasises the intrinsic link between plants and people, promoting sustainable living and environmental stewardship. Actively collaborating with Indigenous communities to protect and sustain traditional knowledge, the founders aim to inspire others by demonstrating how to integrate conservation into daily life.

Their philosophy, “conservation through understanding,” focuses on educating visitors about the value of biodiversity, the importance of preserving rainforest ecosystems, and the critical relationship between people, culture and the natural environment.
