Ultimate OZ for Kids

BLOG | At The Tailor we have a portfolio of amazing Australian trips that are ideal for kids of all ages – everything from snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef to hiking in the Tasmania wilderness and crocodile spotting in the Top End.

It’s never been easier to travel with children. Whether you book a fly and flop holiday in the Pacific, go skiing in Europe or take them to a theme park on the Gold Coast. But how about an adventure they will still be talking about 20 years from now? A unique holiday experience that will change the way they look at the world – and you?

At The Tailor we have a portfolio of amazing Australian trips that are ideal for kids of all ages – everything from snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef to hiking in the Tasmania wilderness and crocodile spotting in the Top End. Apart from being superbly organized and great fun, these experiences also showcase some of Australia’s most amazing landscapes, offering astonishing wildlife encounters and, often, a chance to learn about Aboriginal culture. While some of these holidays, such as bushwalking in Tasmania and diving on the Great Barrier Reef, are naturally better suited to teenagers, most of the suggestions below can be enjoyed by kids of all ages, even those glued to their handheld device. First-time visitors to Australia may imagine that our adventure-based holidays are all located in remote, hard-to-reach places. Not true. In Sydney, for example, your kids to learn to surf on Bondi Beach, Australia’s most famous stretch of sand, or drive a short distance to Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley, a fantastic base for horse-riding, mountain biking, wildlife spotting and other activities near the Blue Mountains National Park.

As parents keeping our children safe is our ultimate concern, especially when taking them to a new country. At the same time we want to expand their horizons and introduce them to new places, flavours and cultural experiences. That’s why Australia is such a great holiday destination for families – few other places offer the same combination of outdoor activities, modern infrastructure, safety protocols and high quality guiding. Here are just some ideas for your next family holiday Down Under – from the city to the Outback and everything in-between. Don’t hold back.

Give Me Wildlife

Can I hug a koala? It’s probably the most common request from visitors to Australia of every age. But there is much more to Australian wildlife than just koalas. At Southern Ocean Lodge, on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, your family will get up close and personal with sea lions, penguins, wallabies, monitors, eagles, koalas, echidnas and, of course, kangaroos. Tasmania, Australia’s most southern state, is the perfect choice for active kids. At Saffire Freycinet, a luxury lodge on the east coast, your energetic offspring can embark on kayaking, fishing and walking adventures, while Pepper Bush Tours will take you deep into the Cradle Mountain and Freycinet national parks, where your kids can meet wombats, wallabies and brush tail wallabies. The island also offers two excellent small group walking tours. Both the Maria Island Guided Walk and Bay of Fires coastal walk are ideal for younger hikers.

Outback For Kids

The Outback may conjure up images of vast, burning deserts but Australia’s unpopulated regions are far more welcoming than that. Families will find plenty of choice. Why not join adventure company Venture North for a fun-filled expedition to the Kimberley, Kakadu or Arnhem Land? They are passionate about the Top End and committed to taking their guests off the beaten track. In South Australia join celebrated guide David ‘Lunch’ Doudle at Australian Coastal Safaris for a personalized tour around the magnificent Eyre Peninsula or explore the mighty Murray River as a guest of The Frames, a stunning riverside property which offers wildlife spotting tours, sunset cruises and other adventures. In the state’s Flinders Ranges, you’ll find Angorichina Station, where your kids can see emus, kangaroos, parrots, yellow-footed wallabies and some of the oldest fossils on earth.

Scintillating Sydney

With its shimmering harbour, flawless beaches, great shopping and fabulous food, Sydney is a pretty easy place to sell to almost any visitor, regardless of their age. But Sydney is a paradise for kids. Whether they want to sail across Sydney Harbour in a luxury yacht charter, learn to ride the waves at Bondi Beach, snorkel with sharks at Sydney Sea Life Aquarium or climb across the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge – Sydney has it all. Families with a little more time on their hands can venture out to the Blue Mountains, a national park which has become a mecca for hikers, abseilers, mountain bikers, kayakers and other white knuckle types. Alternatively book Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley, a magnificent resort and conservation project, on the edge of the Blue Mountains National Park. The resort offers a marvelous array of adventure activities for kids, including tree planting, horse-riding, nature walks and archery.

Fun On The Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s natural wonders and celebrated playground for snorkelers, scuba divers and yachting types. It’s also a brilliant place to take your kids. Indeed, all of the best island resorts operate excellent kids clubs which will keep your young ones entertained while you are out on the reef. Both Lizard Island and Orpheus Island are attuned to the special needs of young families – both have excellent sporting facilities and plenty of guided activities, such as fishing, diving and sailing. They can also visit marine research facilities to learn more about the reef. Further north, Haggerstone Island, is perfect for families looking for a total immersion in nature. Guests stay in thatched huts, explore the coral reef, eat freshly caught fish and sleep under a flawless southern night sky. On the other side of the continent, Sal Salis safari camp offers an ideal base from which to explore Ningaloo Reef – one of the few places on earth where you can swim with giant (yet harmless) whale sharks. Kids can also go kayaking, snorkeling, whale-watching or explore the nearby national park. Families stay in comfortable tented accommodation and enjoy gourmet meals freshly prepared by a resident chef.
